10 Thing You Probably Didn’t Know About Egg Freezing

Whew… so you have read and read up on egg freezing and you think you have a fairly good grasp of what is involved in the process.  Hold on!  Here is a list of things you might not know or have considered:

  1. Egg Freezing was considered “experimental” by the ASRM until October 2012.
  2. Approximately 90%+ eggs survive the thawing process.
  3. Eating high protein foods and drinking coconut water can help alleviate OHSS.
  4. The female egg is the largest cell in the human body.
  5. In 1986, the first baby was born from a frozen egg using the “slow freezing” method.
  6. A woman is born with all the eggs she will produce.
  7. High impact exercise is not permitted when taking stimulation drugs as it could lead to ovarian torsion.
  8.  Caffeine consumption should be eliminated as it can decrease fertility.
  9.  Egg vitrification (or fast freezing) is the de facto method at leading fertility clinics.
  10. Currently most health insurance companies do not cover elective egg freezing.
