Ovarian Reserve & Wilie E. Coyote

posted by Brigitte Adams April 10, 2012

I met a women this weekend who has left the corporate world and is trying to figure out what she wants to do with her life.  I explained that I had recently started Eggsurance.  This opened the floodgate of questions about egg freezing.  She said she was thinking about it, but could not afford the procedure.  Then she mentioned her age .. 42.  As a reader of this blog, and hopefully website, you know that this is well past most clinics cut off age of 38/39. Having just met her, I did not have the heart to tell her she was already too old. She would find out soon enough.

The conversation brought to mind Road Runner running Wile E. Coyote off a cliff.  RR chases Wile E. down a flat canyon and then suddenly the landscape ends. Coyote floats in the air for a bit, his feet back pedaling and then… BAM.. he just drops out of sight.  We spend so much of our lives trying not to get pregnant. We take birth control, use condoms, practice the rhythm method and then… BAM…it is too late.  Our ovarian reserve is diminished.  Our eggs are no longer healthy.  And our bodies go into a Wile E. Coyote free fall. And we wonder, “why didn’t anyone tell me?” Like Wile E. we are surprised by our fate, but we knew we were on a cliff and that the cliff had a drop off point.

Can we make a pact?  If you read this and laughed and then nodded in agreement, please forward this blog to 3 of your favorite women.   They will forward it to another 3 and so on and so on. Or just paste a picture of Wile E. Coyote on your fridge as a reminder to check on your fertility options asap.
